MRI vs CT for Preventive Screening

MRI is better for soft-tissue detail and avoids radiation, making it attractive for repeated whole-body scans. CT is faster, cheaper for some uses, and superior for lung nodules and coronary calcium, but it exposes you to ionizing radiation.

How MRI works

Magnetic resonance imaging uses strong magnets and radio waves to create detailed pictures of organs and soft tissues. It does not use ionizing radiation. MRI is excellent for the brain, spine, joints, liver, and kidneys. Scans can take 30 to 90 minutes and may require lying still inside a narrow tube.

How CT works

Computed tomography uses X-rays rotated around the body to build cross-sectional images. It is fast, widely available, and excellent for lungs, bones, and coronary calcium scoring. The downside is a small dose of ionizing radiation, which matters if you plan repeated scans.

When each is used preventively

Low-dose CT is the established lung cancer screening test for eligible adults. Coronary calcium scoring uses CT to estimate heart risk. Whole-body MRI is marketed for broad soft-tissue surveys in self-pay preventive scans. CT is rarely used for whole-body screening in asymptomatic people because of radiation and incidental findings.

The FDA notes that full-body CT scans have not been shown to provide a net benefit for people without symptoms, and they expose you to radiation while frequently producing findings that lead to more testing. That is why CT shows up in preventive care mainly as targeted, indication-specific scans rather than head-to-toe surveys.

  • Broad soft-tissue survey: elective whole-body MRI, self-pay.

What this does not mean

This does not mean MRI is always safer or CT is always better. Each answers different questions. A normal MRI does not clear you of lung or heart risk, and a CT calcium score does not look for brain or liver tumors.

What to ask the imaging center

Ask which machine will be used, what body parts are covered, who reads the images, and whether the radiologist is subspecialty trained. Ask how results are shared with your doctor and what the center recommends for follow-up.
